Contingency Written Plans
Salem-Teikyo University has developed this Hazard Communication program to ensure that plant employees stay safe and healthy. Salem-Teikyo University's Hazard Communication program provides information about the hazardous materials present in the plant work place. The information includes container labeling, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and employee training. This information is specific to the physical plant only as of this writing.
The outline below describes the program we will administer.
Container Labeling
It is our policy that before use, each container of hazardous materials must possess a label with the following information:
Name of the contents
Appropriate hazard warnings
Name and address of the manufacturer
It is our policy to label all secondary containers in the same manner.
The Maintenance Coordinator will ensure that each container in the maintenance areas has a label with the appropriate information. Lynn Frame, Custodial Coordinator, will ensure that each container in the custodial areas has a label with the appropriate information.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
Material safety data sheets (MSDS) for each hazardous material to which our employees may be exposed are filed in an MSDS binder located in the safety corner of the employee lounge area. Darlena Davis, Physical Plant Secretary, will review newly arriving data sheets for significant health and safety information and see that new information is passed on to the appropriate employees. The responsible individual will also check each new MSDS for completeness. If an MSDS is missing or incomplete, a new MSDS will be requested from the manufacturer. OSHA will be notified if a complete MSDS is not received.
The material safety data sheets are available to all employees during regular business hours. If an MSDS is not available for a particular material, contact Darlena Davis.
Employee Information and Training
Employees will attend hazardous material health and safety training at the request of Salem-Teikyo University. The training will consist of eight separate modules or chapters along with additional supplemental information to be provided by the instructor.
Collectively the training content will address the following areas:
The employee's "Right to Know" law
Product labels and material safety data sheets
Handling of hazardous materials
Automotive repair shop hazards
Clean-up of spills and disposal
Exposure and first-aid procedures
Fire and explosion
Storage and mixing of hazardous materials
It is important that all of our employees understand the training. If you have questions, please contact the Maintenance Coordinator or Lynn Frame, Custodial Coordinator.
List of Hazardous Materials
A hazardous material inventory roster listing all known hazardous materials used in our work place is posted in the Safety Corner of the employee lounge. The roster lists the material name, the operation and area of use and whether or not we presently have an MSDS for the material. Specific information for each hazardous material can be found on the material safety data sheets. The Maintenance Coordinator, and Lynn Frame, Head Custodian, are responsible for updating the hazardous material inventory roster and making our employees aware of the new materials we will be using in our work place.
Informing Contractors
The Maintenance Coordinator will ensure that outside contractors are informed about the hazardous materials they may be exposed to and how to protect themselves from these materials while working in our work place. If you have questions about this plan, contact the Maintenance Coordinator. The Maintenance Coordinator, will make sure that the policies in this plan are carried out. |
