Fabulous Disaster
Decades after the Runaways secured their sphere of influence, members of today's leading all-female rock groups still prefer the naughty-girl outfits and pop-punk riffs that Joan Jett and Lita Ford pioneered. Fabulous Disaster seems more mature than its peers, with teen angst giving way to adult lust and sharp riffs taking the place of simpler chord progressions. In the studio (with NOFX's Fat Mike behind the board), it's easy to get that kind of cred. But it's Fabulous Disaster's ability to replicate that urgency on stage, even when singing lyrics that belie its tuff-girl image (Sitting in my room thinking of you/Half bottle of gin for a heart cut in two), that makes its members the new queens of noise.
Hailed by many as the best all-female punk band ever, San Francisco's Fabulous Disaster's humble beginnings began in early 1998 in the bustling SF punk scene. After playing the clubs for two years and self releasing their first cd "Pretty Killers" in 1999, Fabulous Disaster was rescued from obscurity & signed to Pink and Black/Fat Wreck Chords in 2000. They released two critically acclaimed cd's since, "Put Out Or Get Out" (produced by Fat Mike and Ryan Greene) in 2001 and "Panty Raid" (produced by Fat Mike and Alex Newport) in 2003.
What do Fabulous Disaster sound like? Imagine sweet, sweet harmonies slipping effortlessly into torn, fishnet stockings of punk. They bring the fire. In their pants!!!! Imagine an-all girl group that plays tighter than a rhino-sized butt plug shoved in a gnats ass.Imagine a band that smells good and plays hard as fuck. It's all about sweet devastation and smeared lipstick. You don't even need a GED to get the gist of what they're singin about; songs skid and flicker like a pinball back and forth between revenge, gettin some, love gone wrong, getting run over by Volvos, Joyrides, to good old fashioned angst. Ever wonder what would have happened if Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks got whacked aside the head, slashed by a broken beer bottle, had his blood mingled with both Jane Drano and Dottie Danger of the Go-Go's *, and through the miracle of DNA science, Beth Allen of the Loudmouths could clone a band/army out of her uterus? Wonder no longer. Fabulous Disaster has filled that test tube!!! (Lynda was in the all-girl band, Inside Out, who not only cranked out a Peel Session but happened to be the first all-female band to play Eastern Europe after the wall came down.)
They've toured the world with great bands like NOFX, The Ataris, The Dickies, The Real McKenzies, The Briefs, Mad Caddies, Bouncing Souls, Avail & Propagandhi to name a few. 2004 saw a line-up change with the addition of new guitarist Squeaky and bassist April Fresh and Lynda moving over to the lead vocal spot (Don't worry kids, Sally is still on drums :))). This summer, the girls will be releasing a cd/ep and a 7 inch limited edition picture disc titled "I'm A Mess" for Rodent Popsicle Records. A full on 8 week tour of Europe starting in Germany in August will co-inside with the release. |
